The atom Shamrock hockey team, sponsored by Gary Graham Transport, split a pair of games this past weekend. On Friday the team faced off against the South Huron Sabres, the 6th place team in the league. Southwest came out determined to start the game and the first period saw end to end action. With 4 seconds remaining in the first defender Shane DePelsmaeker took control of the puck from a scramble at Southwest’s blue line, skated his way through the Sabres and fired the puck top shelf to put the team in the lead. Nolan Morehouse and Jacob Kelly take credit for the assists. The second period remained scoreless.
The third period saw South Huron score on a power play to
tie the game up. The Sabres started to
dominate and managed to score 2 more goals in the first 5 minutes of the
third. DePelsmaeker scored his second of
the game with a shot from the point to make the game 3-2. Unfortunately it wasn’t enough as South Huron
scored 2 more to close the game 5-2.
On Saturday December 1st the puck dropped in Glencoe when
the team played the Ridgetown Rebels for the second time this season. Southwest was able to shake off Friday’s game and
going into the second were ahead 2-0. Charlie Pierce got the scoring started after
digging hard at the Rebel net. Tanner
Doxtator and Jacob Kelly assisted.
Pierce got his second of the game to close the period with Doxtator and
Joel Kleinjan assisting. Great
defensive play was top priority for the second period as Southwest played
shorthanded for 6 minutes and kept the Rebels at bay. Third period action saw Southwest open the
floodgates and score 4 more times. Goal
scorers were Jack McAlpine, Cooper Aubertin (2) and Morehouse. Helpers were Doxtator, DePelsmaeker,
Elizabeth Van Bilsen (2), Ethan Carruthers (2) and Braxton Haggith. With the final score of 6-0 the Southwest
Bullets take the win. Ethan Peixoto and
Tyson Hesketh share credit for the shutout.
Next hockey action is Sunday December 9th when
they play host to Mooretown.
